Google releases Android 17 stable update for Pixel devices
Google has officially released Android 17, starting with Pixel 6 and newer devices.
Google has released Android 17 today, with the stable update rolling out to Pixel devices starting now. The rollout is phased, so not every eligible device will see it at the same time, but you can check manually by going to Settings > System > System update on your Pixel.
The initial rollout covers Pixel 6 and newer, including:
- Pixel 6, 6 Pro, 6a
- Pixel 7, 7 Pro, 7a
- Pixel 8, 8 Pro, 8a
- Pixel 9, 9 Pro, 9 Pro XL, 9 Pro Fold, 9a
- Pixel 10, 10 Pro, 10 Pro XL, 10 Pro Fold, 10a
- Pixel Fold and Pixel Tablet
Samsung, Xiaomi, OnePlus, and other manufacturers will follow later, mostly in Q3 or Q4 2026, with some potentially slipping into early 2027.
Android 17 focuses on privacy, multitasking, and performance. Bubbles, the floating app windows feature, are fully enabled now. Cross-device handoff lets you continue tasks between your phone and tablet, similar to Apple’s Continuity. Screen recording gets a floating toolbar, and large-screen support is improved with widgets on external displays and better picture-in-picture.
On the privacy side, Google has added post-quantum cryptography foundations and a new system location button for easier one-tap location control. Contacts access is now session-based, meaning apps only get access when you explicitly grant it each time.
AI features include Gemini Omni for AI-generated video and soundtracks and expanded Voice Translate, though many of these are tied to the June Pixel Feature Drop rather than Android 17 itself.
