Fix: Cannot Edit Clock Widget on iOS 26 Home Screen
After updating to iOS 26, you may be frustrated to find that you can no longer edit the Clock widget on your Home Screen, especially if you dislike the new default style. Many users, like those in this Apple Community discussion, have tried long-pressing the widget expecting to change its appearance, only to find the option is missing or doesn’t work. This issue stems from a common misunderstanding of how widget editing works in iOS, combined with occasional minor software glitches.
Why You Can’t Edit the Clock Widget’s Style
In iOS, each widget style—like the single-city clock versus the multi-city world clock—is considered a separate and distinct widget. The “Edit Widget” function is designed only to change the data displayed within a widget’s existing template, not to change the template itself. For the Clock widget, this means you can edit which city is displayed, but you cannot use the edit menu to transform an analog clock into a digital one or a single clock into a world clock. To change the fundamental style, you must remove the current widget and add a new one with the desired appearance from the widget gallery.
How to Change or Edit the Clock Widget
Follow these steps to get the Clock widget you want on your Home Screen.
1. Change the Widget’s Style by Replacing It
This is the correct procedure for changing the visual appearance of the Clock widget (e.g., from analog to digital, or from a single city to a world clock).
- Press and hold anywhere on your Home Screen until the apps begin to jiggle.
- Tap the minus (-) icon on the corner of the current Clock widget you want to replace.
- Tap Remove Widget to confirm.
- Tap the plus (+) icon in the top-left corner of the screen to open the widget gallery.
- Scroll down or search for Clock.
- Swipe left and right to browse the different available styles and sizes.
- When you find the style you want, tap Add Widget.
- Drag the new widget to your desired position and tap Done in the top-right corner.
2. Edit the City Displayed on the Widget
If you like the widget’s style but simply want it to show the time for a different city, use the “Edit Widget” function.
- Press and hold on the Clock widget on your Home Screen.
- A menu will appear. Tap Edit Widget. (If your screen is in jiggle mode, just tap the widget).
- Tap the name of the currently displayed city (e.g., “Cupertino”).
- Search for and select the new city you want to display.
- Tap anywhere outside of the edit options to save your change.
3. If the ‘Edit Widget’ Menu Doesn’t Appear
If long-pressing the widget does not bring up the edit menu, or if the widget is unresponsive, a minor software glitch is likely the cause.
- Force Restart Your iPhone: This is the most common fix for user interface bugs. Press and quickly release the Volume Up button, press and quickly release the Volume Down button, then press and hold the Side button until the Apple logo appears.
- Update iOS: The glitch may be a known bug that Apple has fixed in a subsequent update. Go to Settings > General > Software Update to check for and install any available patches.

4. Differentiate from the Lock Screen Clock
It is important not to confuse the Home Screen widget with the Lock Screen clock. Customizing the font and color of the time on your Lock Screen is a separate process and will not affect the widget on your Home Screen.
- To customize the Lock Screen, press and hold on your Lock Screen.
- Tap the Customize button at the bottom of the screen.
