How to make Google Maps default to Satellite view

You can make Google Maps default to the Satellite view on Android, while the Default view is a must on iOS and Web so these clients require a manual approach. The only thing in question is data usage but, other than that if the Satellite view is your preference, you can use it whenever the app starts. Learn how to make the Satellite view the default option below.

How do I change Google Maps to start in Satellite view?

You can change the Default view in Google Maps on Android by enabling the “Start maps in satellite view” option in Maps settings. This option is not available on Google Maps for the web and on iOS but Satellite view is just one click away. On iOS, you can always switch to Satellite view from the icon located in the midsection of the right corner, just under your Google Account photo.

Have in mind that defaulting to the Satellite view will consume more data so, if you are out and about and on a low data cap, we suggest sticking to the Standard (Default) view. Offline maps don’t include a Satellite view so you’ll still need a network connection to switch from the Default view. And, again, that will take more data, regardless if you have the offline map for that region. On the other hand, this doesn’t mean much if you have mobile data to spare, and the estimated usage when navigating with Google Maps is no more than 20MB per hour.

So, with that out of the table, here’s how to make Google Maps start in Satelite view on Android:

  1. Open Google Maps.
  2. Tap on your Account at the top right corner and select Settings.
  3. Enable the Start maps in satellite view option.make Google Maps default to Satellite view

The next time you open Google Maps, you should get a Satellite view of your approximate location or the last location you explored. And, with that said, we can conclude this article. Thank you for reading and feel free to share your thoughts in the comments section below.
