How to fix Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 microphone issues

Xiaomi is taking over. The Chinese manufacturer has been producing some great mid-budget handheld devices and receives critical acclaim from both professionals and customers. Additionally, MIUI, the Android-based OS, works as good as you would expect.

However, same as Android, it has its known issues. One of the most reported issues is related to the microphone. Or better, mics. That goes for multiple Xiaomi models, but today we’ll try to address the most popular one.

Of course, we are talking about the Redmi Note 3. This specific device packs two microphones. In theory, they should improve sound but it seems that is not the case always. Somehow they occasionally provoke low sound quality, both in-call and while recording. Nonetheless, there are a few solutions available for this issue. We collected most useful ones, with the hope to help you overcome this problem.

Disable Google Now

Xiaomi’s MIUI stands shoulder to shoulder with the Android operating system. For global market, they offer a quite clean system without excessive bloatware. Also, they implemented a lot of Android features. However, implementing and optimizing those features are two things apart. Google Assistant (Google Now) is a known culprit for the mic issues and you should disable it.

  1. Open Google Settings.
  2.  Tap Search & Now.
  3. Choose Voice.
  4. Tap OK Google detection.
  5. Disable Google Now.

Have in mind that this is just a temporary solution and that it should be permanently resolved with future updates. Then you can use your smart assistant in a seamless fashion.

Update your Firmware

Behind MIUI we have a group of knowledgeable enthusiasts and technicians that work hard for top results. Some of the better-known companies have to look up to this guys. However, for better or worse, updates are not functioning the same way as on Android. You’ll need to download ROM and upgrade with it, rather than download and install updates directly from update servers. Moreover, this way you’ll need to backup your data since everything from the internal memory will be wiped out.

  1. Download the latest ROM for Redmi Note 3 here.
  2. Connect your phone to PC.
  3. Copy ROM in into the downloaded_rom folder, in the phones internal memory.
  4. Launch Updater app on your phone.
  5. Click 3-dots icon and tap Choose Update Package.
  6. Select the ROM you’ve transferred from PC.
  7. The upgrade should start and you’ll be prompted to confirm.

After the process is finished, start your device and test the microphone.

Use SoundAbout app to configure the mic

One of the temporary solutions is Sound About app from the Play Store. With this app, you can configure speakers and microphones. Additionally, and that is related to this problem, you can disable secondary microphone and therefore temporary improve the in-call sound quality.

SoundAbout is available here.

Those were our solutions. As we already stated, they are just temporary workarounds until the developers fix the code. In case you have any questions or remarks, do tell us in the comments section. Or reach us out on Twitter. We look forward to helping you.

These suggestions didn’t help. I have to make all my phone calls with the speaker on or the caller doesn’t hear anything. This started after installing the last update.

In my case it is a hardware issue, the microphone connection is bad. There are some videos on YouTube on how to fix this easily. To see if this is the issue, you simply need to record your voice while firmly squeezing the phone where the microphone is located. It will suddenly start working (until you let go).

Hello, i have a similar problem. When my bluetooth is turned on, i can’t hear my telephone. Both the microphone as the speaker don’t work. It looks like bluetooth is trying to connect to another device. I don’t have this problem when I turn bluetooth of.
