Fix: Google Assistant Reminders not working

google assistant cover 2

Setting reminders with your Google Assistant is one of the best features on Android. You can set it with your voice, for a preferred time or even trigger it by location. And you’ll be notified even if you are offline. You can access reminders later, change, and delete them from your Android. When this feature works, it works flawlessly and many users use it daily. However, it seems that Google Assistant personal reminders are not working for some users.

If you are among them, check the steps below to fix the problem in no time.

Why are my Assistant reminders not working?

There are multiple reasons why Google Assistant reminders are not working for you. The error might be on Google’s side, as well. But, it’s usually on the user’s side and it concerns notifications in the Google app.

What you should do is clear the app’s cache, inspect notifications, or uninstall updates from the Google app. That should sort things out. Of course, you need to set the time when to get notified about a certain reminder you set.

1. Check Google notifications

The first thing to do is take a deep dive into the system notification settings for the Google app. You should find the section with Reminders. Of course, Reminders Notifications are enabled by default, but we’ll need you to confirm that.

This is the most common reason why you are not seeing Google Assistant reminders appearing on your Android device. Now, if notifications settings are not the problem and Google Assistant reminders are still not working, make sure to move to the next step.

Here’s how to enable Google’s notifications:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Apps & notifications (Apps or Apps manager).
  3. Open All apps (Manage apps).
  4. Open Google.
  5. Tap on Notifications.
  6. Make sure that Reminder Notifications are enabled. Also, ensure that they are not set to silent.reminders notifications google app

Also, you can trigger Google Assistant and access Google Assistant settings. Once there, choose Notifications. Tap “View all phone notifications” and then open Reminders. Make sure to toggle on Reminders.google assistant reminders notifications

2. Clear cache/data from the Google app

If the issue persists, we might be looking at the corruption of the local data. This issue pops occasionally, especially if the data file is large and you recently upgraded your Android version. Now, the first thing to do is to just stick to the cache and check whether reminders appear. If they are not appearing, make sure to clear all local data, too.

Here’s how to clear cache/data from the Google app on your Android handset:

  1. Again, navigate to Settings > Apps > All apps > Google.
  2. Tap on Storage.
  3. Tap Clear Cache.
  4. Restart your device.
  5. If Reminder notifications are still not coming through, tap Clear Storage and then OK to confirm the action.assistant reminders not working

3. Disable Battery optimization for the Google app

Additionally, you can try and disable Battery optimization for the Google app. Usually, this is only the problem on heavy Android skins, that terminate apps and prevent them from working in the background. Although, this rarely happens if those apps are the system apps, which Google usually is. Nonetheless, give it a go, just to ensure that this isn’t causing the problem.

If the issue persists, you can revert everything by just restoring Battery optimization for the Google app.

Here’s how to disable Battery optimization for the Google app:

  1. And, again navigate to Settings > Apps > All apps > Google.
  2. Tap Battery.
  3. Ensure that Google can use the battery in the background.
  4. In addition, you can open the Battery optimization menu and add Google to the list of apps that are not optimized.

4. Uninstall Updates for the Google app

As the Google Assistant is integrated within the Google app which can’t be uninstalled, the only thing you can do is reinstall updates. That way, you’ll reset the app and, hopefully, address the problem at hand. You should also leave the Beta program if you are a part of it. Chances are that the recent version is not stable which results in the Reminders bug.

Here’s how to uninstall updates from the Google app and reset the app to its original factory values:

  1. Open Play Store.
  2. Locate and expand Google.
  3. Tap Uninstall updates.
  4. Restart your device and make sure to install updates before moving to set up Google Assistant.

5. Remove your Google account and add it again

Finally, you can also try removing your Google account from the device and adding it again. If there’s a glitch within the app, it should be resolved the next time you sign in. Make sure to back up your data before doing this.

This is a Hail Mary of solutions but the options are, more or less, depleted. You can also reset your device to factory settings, but that’s not a guaranteed solution if the issue is on Google’s side.

Here’s how to remove your Google account on Android and add it again:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Accounts.
  3. Select Google.
  4. Remove the account you are signed in with.
  5. Restart your device.assistant reminders not working
  6. Sign in with your account again.
