Fix: Duplicate text message notifications on iPhone

When I got my first iPhone, I noticed a strange behavior where I got the notification for the same text message twice. At first, I thought it was a bug, but then I looked it up and found out that duplicate text message notifications on the iPhone are there on purpose.

If you’re wondering about the same thing, stick with me and I’ll tell you what’s going on and how to disable duplicate notifications if you find them annoying.

How to disable duplicate text message notifications on iPhone

By default, your iPhone is set up to send you alerts whenever you miss a text message. These alerts come in a form of a regular notification and will appear two minutes after you receive a text. So, if you still haven’t opened the latest text message, you’ll get another notification reminding you that there’s an unread message.

While it could be useful to have multiple notifications from text messages, many users find it annoying. If you’re among them, there’s a way to easily disable the repeating alerts. Here’s what you need to do:

  1. Go to Settings.
  2. Head over to Messages > Notifications.duplicate text message notifications ios
  3. Tap Customize Notifications > Repeat Alerts.
  4. Choose Never.

On the opposite side, just like you can disable alerts altogether, you can also increase their frequency. So, if you want to be constantly reminded about the latest text message, you can go back to settings and set Repeat Alerts to up to 10 Times. If you do this, you’ll receive alerts at two-minute intervals as many times as you’ve chosen.

Bonus: Toggle iMessage off and on

If the above-mentioned workaround doesn’t work, you can try the alternative solution and that is to toggle iMessage off and back on. If there’s some kind of interference that causes duplicate notifications, resetting the iMessage settings should resolve the issue. Here’s what you need to do:

  1. Go to Settings.
  2. Head over to Messages.
  3. Toggle the iMessage option off.duplicate text notifications iphone
  4. Wait for a few moments.
  5. Now, toggle iMessage back on.

That’s about it. I hope at least one of these solutions helped you get rid of the duplicate text message notifications on your iPhone. If you have any comments, questions or suggestions, feel free to let us know in the comments below.
